BOUNTIFUL BERRIES

Did you know that the botanical definition of a berry is a fleshy fruit produced from one ovary?  With that being said, the following are considered true berries. . . pumpkin, watermelon, grapes, bananas, tomatoes, honeysuckle, etc.  Other fruits that we typically think of as berries are not berries in the botanical sense. They may be what we call drupes or stone fruit (acai berry), epigynous fruits (blueberries), or compound fruits (strawberries).

However, for this exercise I am including those that we think of as berries.  See if you can discover 12 more known berries hidden in this puzzle (I did blue.  . . berries for you).  All the letters need to connect -- either up, down, sideways or diagonal to form the word.

Pot of Gold

How well do you know your Irish foods?  Well, here's a game that will test your knowledge.  Below is a list of foods.  Which ones are typically found in Irish "pots" and which are not.  You can see if you are right, by peeking at the answers further down.  The luck of the Irish to you!*

                                                        Irish Potatoes
Soda Bread
Corned Beef & Cabbage
Colcannon
Barm Brack
Coddle
Crubeens
Black Pudding
Bacon & Cabbage
Drisheen
Tayto
Nettle Soup
Irish Stew

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Answers:  All of them are typical Irish foods except for Corned Beef & Cabbage.  That dish actually originated with the Irish living in America.  Corned beef was scarce and was costly in Ireland but when they emigrated to the U.S. they found it readily available.

*The term "the luck of the Irish" really means bad luck and not good luck (although I meant good luck to you!).  That was because historically the Irish were typically unlucky people.

This saying does originate in America.  Some even say that it was meant that the Irish who found gold in California found it because of luck and not because they were capable of success.

Chicken Noodle:  Churchgoer, on the whole.  Also loyal, relaxed, a homebody; someone who likes hobbies like quilting or photography.  Also loves daytime talk-shows.

Tomato:  "Affectionate" is your middle name.  Pets, people and yet you also like to spend time alone and are an avid reader of books.  Creative, inside and outside the kitchen.  Adventurous too; you're always up for something new. . . and that includes wild and crazy foods.

Vegetable:  A real homebody. . . gardener. . . reader of family magazines.  You love dessert, but are nutritious conscious.  You're mad about cooking, but not about traveling.

New England Clam Chowder:  Sophisticated and intellectual!  Cynical, introspective, thoughtful!  Self indulgent when it comes to food.  Known to be sarcastic.  You rarely cook from scratch.

Chili-Beef:  manly, hearty, extremely competitive, a little unpredictable, a beer-drinking party boy except when you're home -- that is when you turn into a TV-loving couch potato.

Minestrone:  You love the outdoor life and fitness.  Nutrition conscious and often dieting.  A family lover.  Not one for pets, though.

Ice Cream Personality Test

A national manufacturer of ice cream, Edy's Grand Ice Cream, commissioned an ice cream flavorology study to determine how ice cream preferences relate to personality. The study, conducted by Dr. Alan R. Hirsch (M.D.) neurological director of the smell and taste treatment and research foundation in Chicago, revealed that distinct personalities correspond with ice cream flavors.

Choose from the following to see your "personality"!  Then see who you're compatible with -- do you think the results are true?  We'd love to hear your comments!

Chocolate

Banana
Strawberry
