Eating an apple a day may, in fact, help keep the doctor away. Here's why:
Apples contain quercetin which is a phytochemical believed to have strong antioxidant and anticancer properties. It may help to prevent colon, prostrate and lung cancer. It may also protect brain cells which in turn may reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease.
Apples also contain a flavanoid called phloridzin (in fact apples are the only food that contains this) and boron. Researchers feel that this may help increase bone density which would help protect against osteoporosis.
The pectin in apples also lowers LDL (the bad) cholesterol. Just eating two apples a day may lower your cholesterol by as much as 16%. The pectin also supplies galacturonic acid to the body which decreases
the body's need for insulin and may help in managing diabetes.
